VCT (Voluntary counseling and Testing Center)
BOH has found that when addressing the issue of HIV/AIDS strictly feeding the women and teaching them a vocational skill is not enough. It is critical to ncourage community members to take seriously their health matters. Thus, it is imperative that the people in the community come to a certified centre to know their HIV/AIDS status and then be counseled regardless of the results, to understand how they can continue to live their lives to the fullest potential. We began the VCT in May 2003 and so far more than 15,000 people have been tested.
Post test Support group
BOH runs a Support Group for HIV positive people. The group members include women, children and men from Ongata Rongai and its environs who have visited our VCT Centre. The VCT Centre and the support group has been a great success despite the fact that we have lost some of the very active members through death. BOH post test group started in 2004.The program was set up to help those infected with HIV fight stigma and to find a common place to share experiences .The aim of the support group is to teach members more about HIV/AIDS, Opportunistic infections, how to care for oneself, adherence to ARV drugs. This group meets once a week. The meeting is headed by a trained facilitator. Some groups have graduated after the learning. Children infected with HIV/AIDS, have their own support group. The facilitator mainly uses play therapy to teach the children and help them understand what is happening to their bodies.
